Bastard full movie review - Worth The Watch
To start off, this has been my first encounter with the writer and director of this film; along with the entire cast from what I can see.
After watching Bastard as part of the 8 Films To Die For series with Big Bad Film production; I have come to the conclusion that I definitely want to see more by these two!
When the film began I was a little thrown off with the intro, which you can see for yourselves in the film. It was just a different style I haven't been used to seeing and I thought i've seen a lot of styles for movie intros in my addiction to film. As I kept watching I liked how it began. It introduced a few characters, setting up the vibe for the rest of the film. Let me tell you, I was not disappointed in the first introductions.
As the film progressed the other characters came into play; some of them had a little back story to them some were mysterious, but all were interesting. Each character had something a little different about them that made each of them stand out on their own. Some were horrifying, some were innocent, some left you to wonder. All made you try to figure out what each of them were capable of.
Once all of the characters were brought to life the story continued on a path that left you guessing. This film had more twists than I was expecting. It made me want to follow certain characters, leading you one direction and distracting you from others. But at the same time not distracting you. To some that may not make sense but to make good twists you really need to throw some curve balls to deliver; and this film as done that rather well.
I enjoyed the fact that from what I saw, the use of practical effects was greatly emphasized. Time and effort was placed in these gags, and some surprise props will leave you laughing out loud and wondering what in the world.
The acting was pretty good, each actor seemed to really put some heart and sole into their characters; some better than others, however, none left you saying that person is a bad actor. From the main characters to the small roles, everyone put a good effort into their parts. Most, if not all, of these actors I don't believe I've seen before. But I for sure would love to see some of them again in future films I watch.
The film as a whole was easy to follow in my opinion. Sure, it has twists and turns but nothing seemed out of place. I really enjoyed the lighting and tone changes. From the music that seemed to go very well together to the cinematography. Everything seemed to flow together pretty smoothly.
Overall: This film is worth seeing, it was done well. It had all the elements you'd want in a horror movie, and no sense of being too cheesy was witnessed in this film. Some cheesiness was included but necessary. It did what is was designed to do; entertain, horrify, wonder, confusion, enjoy, thrill, re-think and be thirsty for more. A few minor tweaks and this film would be perfect! Definitely deserves the 9/10 though for sure.
Check it out!! You won't be disappointed. Great job to all involved!
