Kingsglaive: Final Fantasy XV full movie review - Seriously Not For Everyone and Not For Average Moviegoer, More On Pleasing Games Fans
Compare to FF:Spirit Within and FFVII:Advent Children, this movie seems to be the combination of these 2 movies. The CG movie maker try to make a fantasy movie (but no Sci Fi this time) like FF:Spirit Within, but with story telling style of FF VII:Advent Children.
They expect every audience before going to watch this movie already has full or partial knowledge about the game story. So, they cut a whole bunch of story and plot into flashback in the beginning of the movie, and expect you to understand everything, and they just progress from what was happened after the flashback. This is the main reason why this movie is very hard to be understood on the first viewing, you need multiple viewing to understand the complex plot. Recently I bought Bluray for this movie and start re-watching only able to fully understand the whole story
So, for some reviewer saying movie critics are getting it wrong, I would say critic get it right this time, the plot and story really confusing for the first time watching. The story could have been cut into a few part, but for game selling purpose, they seems making this as an extended plot of the game with a prequel story rather than making it into a main stream movie for mass audience.
No question on CG quality, only thing lacking is the story telling style need to get to mass moviegoer rather than just pleasing Final Fantasy fans. Just like FF VII:Advent Children, that movie only made for fans who has played the original FF VII games, where the plot continue from the ending of that game. So, you will get confused on everything happen on that movie if you haven't played that game, the brief flashback at the beginning of that movie is seriously not enough.
So, advise to watch this movie on Bluray rather than at theater as it is a movie that need multiple re-watching to understand if you don't have any knowledge on the game story. It is not like the movie Matrix that try to confuse the plot with pretentious deep plot. It is a normal fantasy movie that need another prequel to tell a complete story rather than just throw in everything into a single movie.
Perhaps, this is the movie maker intention where it try not to tell you everything and want you to explore those missing plot in the game. My rating on this movie is also gauging on the story telling, so just 6 stars, not just CGI quality show off. However, after understand the story, this movie actually is very watchable and very sad at time. I finally understand each character motivation after 2 to 3 times of re-watching.
PS:Actually when I first watch the movie at theater, the quality of the CG actually feel like a Bluray movie quality only (1080p quality), simply not up to the mark for big screen theater quality, feel much disappointed on the first viewing. However, now the movie is in Bluray format, and it is perfectly fine to watch it again, and the quality really top notch on Bluray. So, seems this movie is directly made on Bluray quality rather than for theater release.
