Kung Fury full movie review - Furious Fun
I'm not always too keen on fan films or most short films in general, most of them to me are always hit or miss. This one though is one of those hits, and it hits hard.
It hits so hard it really made me wish this was a full length film. I was a kid from the 80's decade so seeing this was like a breath of fresh air to me, this film is practically a love letter to that decade. It's sort of like watching a live action shonan anime much like the anime/manga series "Jo Jo's Bizarre Adventure" now that series was a trip just as this short is. The film just plastered a smile on my face from beginning to end and that's not a feeling I get enough of.
I really love the amount of energy and colorful creativity it has while having it's tongue placed firmly at it's cheek. Yeah, this has a ridiculous plot let alone most of what happens is ridiculous and cheesy but the film is aware of it and goes with it which makes it all the more fun.
I really like the production value, it was made on a low budget but it was used well. I really like the effects from the big to little which helped create both the film but bring out the 80's staples which this film has a lot of. For example, there is some of the VHS like grainess in some parts which really gave you the feeling you were watching an 80's TV show episode from an old VHS cassette.
Music is also great there 80's style tracks, but I really love that song in the end credits which is awesome and one of my favorite movie soundtrack songs, and it's sung by David Hasslehoff whom actually has a bit role in this film, I'll give you a hit has something to do with a talking car. There's even a music video of that song which is great because it really felt like a throwback to a time when MTV didn't suck.
I really love how the main protagonist and the others all play it straight, which is part of how the comedy in this short works in fact that's how a good parody works. Despite all the craziness around them they all just go with it as if it was just another day.
Kung Fury is just a awesome bad ass protagonist, he has some of the best dead pan lines and performance I've ever heard that just cracked me up, I even really like that voice he has which is great and just spells out bad ass.
Barbariana not much to say for her, she's a Viking babe armed with a Vulcan gun. Despite not in the film that long she was awesome let alone the actress that played her was fraking hot both physically and persona to boot.
Triseracop whom is a Dinosaur that is a cop not kidding. He's not in the film that much either but you get a good feel for the character as he has a distinguished British accent and is useful he gets to kick a lot of ass as well.
The action is great,it is just over the top insanity which makes it all the more awesome and something I feel we need more of. I even like some of the gore effects which are on par. Like one effect that is my favorite was seeing a cop getting sliced in half but it's on the side of his body not the front which is something different.
This film has some great battles, my favorite of course is seeing Kung Fury go to town on just a massive amount of Nazi's. What made that battle great was in the format they used where we saw him fighting guy going back and forth direction making it look almost like watching a live action beat em up video game. Like in those games we just see him putting on basic moves but also using some power moves like kicking a guy's head off literally, taking one guy and just swinging and slamming his body left and right and the Nazi's body parts are just flying, and a lot of other moves.
I would love to see a sequel, may'be even a TV show on the Adult Swim block on "Cartoon Network", or even better a full length film. Any of these options I'd be fine with.
Kung Fury is furious fun.
