Me Him Her full movie review - Slapdash, crudely made and pretty bad overall, but weirdly watchable
I wasn't expecting much going into this film and I have to say I was, at least, entertained. Now, this movie comes from screenwriter Max Landis.
He is a guy I can admire for his brilliant self promotion, but I can't say I'm a huge fan of his style of writing. This film was obviously supposed to be a step forward for him, into non-genre film territory, and what comes out is a sloppy, trashy looking, sometimes very funny, sometimes very annoying and sometimes very charming film. Lets start in the visuals department: This movie looks like a web series. I was shocked at the lack of style in this film, which is something I think it would have defiantly benefited from. Add to that, its edited together like an ADD youtube video, even with words being said popping up on the screen in text. Sometimes this helps the comedy, sometimes it doesn't. This movie can actually be quite hilarious at times (mainly due to Haly Joel Osment and a giant penis) if not consistently. It also tries, emphasis on tries, at some peppered in surrealism (which lands less on the side of Being John Malkovich and Adaptation and more on the side of Synecdoche, New York, if you know what I mean) which mostly feels forced, much like the incredibly on the nose talks on sexuality. The ending, I have to say, is truly awful. And by the ending, I mean the last twenty minutes or so where a sword fight breaks loose. But I can't say I didn't enjoy it overall, because something kept pulling me back to it every time I wanted to turn it off, invisible wires pulling me away from exiting out of safari. So, I think this movie is bad overall, not really bad, just bad. Entertaining bad? Sure.
